RuneCrafting

Runes are a dangerous and meticulous craft. Able to harness, transmit, store, and expel forces of magic. While advanced enough runes can indeed create influences reaching into multiple branches of the Wylstream, generally only basic effects are ever achieved and learned. Knowledge and practice with the advanced nature of magic and runes makes it incredibly difficult to research and advance rune crafting, so most only stick to their own practiced arts.

Runes work like a written language, communicating intent to the Wylstream, guiding it's flow. Assembling runes is like programming. Each rune mark is a component making a whole conduit of intent. Single run marks on their own might have some effect, but for a particular use and intent, runes must be designed along side one another.

Runes can also translate certain abilities into similar. For instance, a fire caster can, if they poses the knowledge, create runes which converts the energy of thrown flames into a compressed form of Wylstream and have the runes convert the flow of fire into strikes of electrical arcs.

Crafting

Runes must be carved via an attuned chisel or knife while also hyper focusing/meditating the particular kind of Wylstream the rune is meant to hold. Some are capable of using their focused Wylstream and claw to carve runes, but usually only when a chisel is simply not available as the potential for faults is greater.

Once a rune is carved and a trace of the Wylstream energy exists within it, a rune may then be imbued. Imbuing is a necessary step to make it do anything. Without imbuing, a rune might glow slightly on occasion, but otherwise does not do much. Imbuing a rune is to meditate a concentration of the element and branch into the runes. For example, a rune to make water flow upside down must be concentrated upon by one who can cast water magic, and be adorned in water as well. In a way, the rune must be told and shown what it is meant to do and affect on a small scale before it may do anything on its own.

RuneSmiths

While there are a few fields who utilize crafting basic runes for their own path or purpose, they are often limited to only the few spells and types. A Runesmith is a master of the runic knowledge, able to harness the natural magic surrounding them while carving in order to create complex, longer lasting, and much more powerful runes. While a Runesmith might not be able to imbue every single rune they create, there are few outside of their reach. As opposed to casting wild magic, runes must be prepared ahead of time. Because of this, Runesmiths are not typically combatants. Because Runesmiths know the consequences of improper rune use, they don't simply work for a fee. Rather, if you supply a Runesmith what they need, they will often choose and make the rune they believe you need and can handle when the time is right.

Activation

Most runes do not run passively on their own but must be activated by an event. Some runes are reactionary and others await input. Depending on the particular use of runes may dictate how the runes are assembled.

When a rune is functional via passive means it merely needs to be briefly stoked by the elements it is meant to affect once placed or moved so the flow of it's use is established, where which it can run almost indefinitely and is only then limited by supply of what it is affecting, how it is moved, and the residual imbued power eventually falling to natural deterioration.

A rune can be activated by a passing effect or by establishing something particular to wait for to be triggered. For example, runes might be placed along a path so that as someone walks along the pavement it is carved into, it will ignite lighting in the area until the person leaves and allows the runes to return to a dormant state.

Other runes can be made to activate and de-activate upon gesture or command. Runes surrounding a canister on a glow crystal lantern for example can be used to open and close the casing as well as ignite the brightest glow from the crystal to illuminate the are.

Levels of Runes

Runes vary by level. Those created more commonly are usually small and have soft effects, or do not last long. Here are a few visual examples.
